Day 2 – The Volcano and the Wild South in 4WD & lava’s tunnel exploration

Departure around 7:00 am in direction of the Volcano via the South and Le Tampon. Crossing la “Plaine des Cafres”, a market garden and a cattle-breeding area, the first stop is at the viewpoint of “Nez De Bœuf” (2070 m) for the forming cirque “La Rivière des Remparts”: a huge canyon and a difference in level of 1000m! You stop secondly at “Le Pas des Sables” for the impressive view over “La Plaine des Sables”, the exceptional lunar landscape. Arrival at “Pas de Bellecombe” (2311m), from where you have the unique view over the “Piton de la Fournaise Massif” (one of the most active red volcano of the world). Continuation to the windward coast called the “Wild South” because of the contrasts with the blue (ocean), the green (tropical vegetation) and the black (lava flows). The discoveries continue with the rivers of lava that crossed the national road several times during the past decades, especially in the “Great Burnt Land”. Traditional Creole lunch.
Be then ready for an unforgettable moment into the center of the earth. A guide will lead you through a lunar world to discover the intricacies of lava carved by recent eruptions. The Piton de la Fournaise welcomes you to his palace made out of basalt for an unusual experience. After setting up the lighting for cavers (acetylene) and the front light that areprovided, you’ll be able to enjoy an overview of the various underpasses. First you’ll go through a 10 minutes walk on a square surface of grey basalt that will lead you to the conduit. Then you’ll get closer inside the volcano to see beautiful formations made out of lava that has been cooled at the end of eruptive phase. When the molten lava goes through the landscape and especially trees, it creates slaloms between natural pillars. Thus, you can see magnificent “Bulbeuses” stalagmites and negative trunks carved into the wall of this metal and frozen world. Here and there, some roots are making their way through the mineral galleries reminding us that nature always takes over.
Return around 12:30.
before the return to your hotel.
